Education, medical aid and destitute women and children have been the main pillars on which has stood the urbanized social work edifice and the lower steps meant to reach these high pedestals, probably, have been made far steeper into the surrounding rural areas. The gap then, between the far-flung rural areas and the rural periphery of large urban centers and metropolises too, could not be covered even by conveyor belts of a well organized Government system through various levels of the extension sub-systems in most welfare/social service sectors.
The economic welfare sub-systems remained most ineffective in spite of a colossus of cooperative system, in various forms and shapes, because of the impersonal approach and a communication system that emerged all along to be an elitist infrastructure. The local resources of man and material, for a sound base of effective, result oriented and operational social work for development, have continued to be ignored, though inadvertently most times.
All these mind boggling complexities brought together a small group of SIRDI founders who contemplated, discussed and ultimately concretized their views by establishing the society “SIRDI” (Satpura Integrated Rural Development Institution). It was registered in 1978 under the M.P. Society Registration Act.
